OUT & ABOUT
Arles
Arles, situated on the River Rhone, is in an excellent position to visit the major attractions of Provence.
It boasts magnificent Roman remains including a large amphitheatre, temples and baths.
In the sunny south-eastern corner of France, Provence is steeped in history, from the times of the Greeks and Romans and through the medieval era when the French papal court was established at Avignon. Cézanne was born here and the light and scenery attracted many artists such as Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse and Chagall.
For students of natural history and geography, a stay in Provence should include a visit to the Camargue with its rich variety of wildlife.
